About Buzz Cover Crop Seeds

Founder Rebecca Sweet was raised in the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. In her adolescence she moved to ‘America’s Fruit Basket’, the San Joaquin Valley. Here is where she began asking herself:

“Where do the wild things live?”

This question was on her mind when she met her mentor, Dr. Robert Bugg, who began showing her around the many on-farm conservation biology research projects that he was part of in the central valley of California. After obtaining a BS in Environmental Biology from Humboldt State University, Rebecca moved to Oregon for grad school. At Oregon State University she studied cover crops as pathogen suppressants in vegetable systems, but was quickly lured into the subject of viticulture. Under the guidance of plant physiologist and mycorrhizal fungi expert Dr. Paul Schriener, Rebecca completed a Master’s thesis on cover crops in two Willamette Valley Pinot Noir vineyards. Rebecca’s professional experience includes managing 20 acres of organic blueberries, 13 years of sustainable and organic vineyard management, 14 years of inspection work for the LIVE program, and 3 combined years of teaching at OSU, the Southern Oregon Wine Institute and Chemeketa Community College.

Buzz Cover Crop Seeds was born out of a desire to help farms maximize ecological function and agricultural productivity with every cover crop application. We collaborate with Oregon State University and University of Oregon on pollinator research and extension, and are actively engaged in supporting the wine industry.
